Dr. Valerie Wiesner serves as an Acting Assistant Branch Head in the Crew Systems and Aviation Operations Branch (D318) since May 2022, while also working as a Research Materials Engineer in the Advanced Materials and Processing Branch (D307) at NASA Langley Research Center. Her research focus is on developing and understanding degradation of ceramic coatings and composites for extreme aerospace environment applications from reusable hypersonic vehicles to lunar and planetary exploration and surface operations. She transferred to Langley in 2019 after working as a Research Materials Engineer at NASA Glenn Research Center, and she earned her Ph.D. in materials engineering from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and B.A. in physics with certificate in Japanese Language from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota.
